CMS Updates ICD-10-CM Codes Effective October 1, 2016, DSM-5 Also Receives Update

CMS ICD-10 medical diagnosis codes are changing October 1, 2016CMS is changing a number of ICD-10 codes to take effect on October 1, 2016. This is the first update to the ICD-10 codebase since 2010.

Most changes relate to specifiers, but a number of them are modifications of the ICD-10 codes themselves. Some of the changes were made to align the terminology used in the DSM-5 with descriptions of the F-codes in ICD-10.

For behavioral health professionals, there are 14 direct ICD-10-CM code changes that are applicable to claims with dates of service on or after October 1, 2016 (see list below).

We have a codes list that will be changingThe goal, as stated by the American Psychological Association (APA), is to, “allow more accurate diagnostic recording, improved communication among clinicians, and better means for collecting prevalence data.”

APA has also released an update to the DSM-5 (pdf) that explains the new ICD-10 codes and other important updates.

For all Dates of Service starting October 1, 2016, practitioners will need to use the updated codes in BreezyNotes:
