Pro Tips: Send Taxonomy Code to Insurance Payer In 3 Steps

Some payers are now requiring a Billing Provider Specialty code (also called a Taxonomy code) included in Box 33a of the CMS1500. That’s the form that is sent every time you click “Save, Sign & Submit”.

But don’t worry about that insurance jargon. If this is required of you, all you need to do is change one setting in BreezyNotes EHR and you’ll be set to bill! But first, let’s answer a couple questions:

What is my billing provider “specialty” or “taxonomy” code?

Whether it’s called a “Specialty” or “Taxonomy” code, if you have a Type II NPI, you have a Billing Provider code. Like your individual taxonomy code, it tells payers and governing bodies what your clinic specializes in (even if that clinic is just you). For instance, the code for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist is “106H00000X” and “251S00000X” is the Billing Provider Specialty code for Community/Behavioral Health.

If you’re not sure where to find your taxonomy code is, CMS’s NPI registry will help.

Which payers require the Taxonomy code?

At this time, the only payer we are aware of that requires this code in ERA’s is Minnesota-based Ucare.
Use BreezyNotes EHR mental health practice management software to add taxonomy codes to ERA's in one step

How do I add the taxonomy code to my ERA’s?

If you are credentialed with Ucare or another payer that requires a taxonomy code in ERA’s, here’s the quick and easy way to add the code:

  1. Use the left menu bar to navigate to Administration > Facilities.
  2. Click on the facility that will be billing this payer.
  3. In the “Billing Provider Specialty/Taxonomy” box, enter your taxonomy code.

Once you’ve completed those three steps, you’re set! The taxonomy code will be added onto every ERA you send whether the payer requires it or not.
